Presentation of the check to Hope For Freedom
January 15, 2017
I’ve always had a century ride on my bucket list. I knew I’d do one in 2017 but I never thought that I could do something more significant than just ride my bike for 100 miles. I’m excited to do not only 100 miles in one day but 250 miles over 3 days (50m, 100 m, 100 m) for three reasons (1) To raise awareness and money for Hope For Freedom whose mission is Gathering.Equipping.Mobilizing to end modern day slavery (www.goChristFellowship.com/serve/hope-for-freedom). I am honored to be a part of making a difference in someone’s life, (2) St. Augustine (the starting location) is not only the oldest city in the U.S. but most notable is that it was the hub of the slave trade. I want to visit St. Augustine which represents a significant part of my family’s history. My 3rd great-grandfather was a slave that came from the Jacksonville/St Augustine area. Every generation after him, lived as slaves on plantations in this area before they were brought to the northeast by their owners. (3) Commemorate a milestone birthday by doing something for others (raise awareness of slavery – historical and modern-day). Reaching this goal will require significant time and mental commitment to training, that I push my body to do something I’ve never done before, and have faith in God to help me accomplish my goal and keep me safe during my rides. I will be strong and courageous (Deut. 31:6) and I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13).
