Kamaliʻi PTA is teaming up with Grow Some Good and Fiscal Sponsor Tri-Isle Resource Conservation & Development to Grow Some Good in the Neighborhood!
Our goal is to expand the Kamaliʻi garden to provide nutrition education and outdoor curriculum support for all grade levels. Theme gardens, such as the Pizza Garden, Green Smoothie and Three Sisters Gardens, are being developed to match learning benchmarks for each grade and inspire better nutrition. Year-end harvest parties feature local chefs working with students to prepare kid-friendly recipes with garden-grown ingredients. Kamaliʻi is adding a new equipment shed and a nursery as part of a Grow Some Good program, called Plant It Maui! aimed at inspiring home gardens. During the program, students plant organic and heirloom starts from seed to be distributed during Work & Learn Days and after-school programs. During this outreach event, students and Master Gardeners conduct mini-workshops with parents on how to care for plants.
In order to integrate Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Math and Language Arts, as well as Hawaiian Studies, Art, History, Nutrition and Social Studies at all grade levels, Grow Some Good is partnering with Kamaliʻi PTA to contract a part-time school garden coordinator. The coordinator is responsible for scheduling all classes in the outdoor classroom and modeling garden-based lessons that give hands-on experiences with learning benchmarks.
Donations will help to fund this part-time position through the remainder of the 2013-14 school year and purchase a new shed for equipment, tools and other class materials.
