Please help us raise much needed scholarships to send Central Coast youth to CLI!
The CommUnity Leadership Institute (CLI) prepares high school youth to be leaders for diversity and justice in their schools and communities. Through this core program we work with 40-50 high-school age youth per year to strengthen leadership, communication, and advocacy skills while tackling important issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic inequality. We do this through workshops, open discussion, experiential activities, and skill-building. These students work with hundreds of additional students each year as they work to improve their schools and communities. Following the 8-day summer program, Just Communities provides year-round support to the students as they work to turn their learning into action. In recent years, Santa Barbara County students implemented projects such as: working with schools to create the first gender neutral bathroom in Santa Barbara County; focusing on dismantling oppressive language at by educating school staff, administration, and students about the impact of words; and starting a Justice Week with workshops and guest speakers that can speak directly to each area of oppression in their schools.
While CLI seeks to serve youth who represent the diversity of California’s Central Coast, the majority of those who attend cannot afford the $1,750 annual cost and can only participate with significant scholarship support. One hundred percent of the youth that attended CLI in August of 2015 applied for some level of financial aid.
Please help us raise the funds that we need so that all students can attend CLI this summer!
