I am proud to be the Program Director at Just Communities Central Coast. For over 5 years, I have been fortunate to work for an organization that “works to ensure that Central Coast schools, organizations, and communities are places of opportunity, not places of limitation.” Just Communities engages students, educators, parents, and others in the community in leadership development, dialogue, action planning, and mobilizing for social change.
Each summer, Just Communities board, staff, and supporters work hard to raise the scholarship funds necessary to support high school students wishing to participate in the CommUnity Leadership Institute (CLI). CLI brings together youth from diverse backgrounds who work together to develop their leadership for promoting equity around issues, such as race, socio-economic class, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, language, ability, and other identities.
My experience on CLI staff transformed my ideas about the wisdom of youth and gave me great hope for the future. I saw young people sharing their ideas and talking about their goals for a future where social justice is the norm. At CLI they develop the language and skill for talking about topics others find challenging to discuss. They feel empowered to take action for their ideas for equity and inclusion.
We need scholarship funds to make sure all students who want to participate in CLI are able to attend. To help reach this goal, I have set a personal goal to raise $1,750, which is the cost of one full scholarship for a student to attend the 8-day residential CLI. Would you please help send a student to CLI?
Please join my 2016 CLI Scholarship fundraising team by clicking this link. Every gift goes to ensuring that no student will be turned away due to financial need.
If you or someone you know has gone through one of these programs, please help by sharing your story and becoming a fundraiser to make CLI accessible for all students who wish to attend.
Thank you for your support!
