i don’t know about you but i’m pretty sick of people dying in this country from guns. a few stats:
- there are 33,000 deaths from guns every year in the US
- americans are 20 times more likely to die from gun violence than people in other developed countries
- in some states, as many as 1 in 10 gun purchases are by people who are prohibited from purchasing a gun (nationwide it is 1 in 30)
- research shows ⅔ of accidental gun deaths of children could have been avoided with safer gun storage
….does this make you as livid as it makes me? i love this country but i freaking hate this barbaric aspect of our culture. so, for my birthday this year, i would love for you to save the “happy birthday” post for next year and instead support my crowdfunding campaign to fight gun violence.
i know this can be a divisive issue, which is why i’m routing all of your cash to Everytown for Gun Safety, which is working on research and advocacy to create common-sense gun safety laws across the country (things like universal background checks, which 92% of americans support, and closing the gun show loophole). obama’s executive actions are a great step but there is lots more to be done, and supporting Everytown means supporting their research and public awareness efforts so that, slowly but surely, everyone agrees enough about this issue that dumb “stand your ground” laws (which increase homicides 80-300%) stop getting made.
pretty pretty please, make my 26th birthday wish come true and contribute $26 or $2.60 to this campaign that is really important to me.
