Every day our son David wakes up to check his blood sugar. He will do that 4 or 5 times again throughout the day. He inserts his insulin pump multiple times a week and adjusts his insulin dose every time he eats. Tens of thousands of needlesticks later, diabetes is a constant in his life - it never takes a vacation. For the past 10 years, he has fought every day to stay ahead of his diabetes. It is never easy, never predictable. But he does not give up no matter how frustrating. Since age 8 he has shouldered much more responsibility than any child should have to. Now that he is truly managing his diabetes on his own at college, I couldn't be more proud of him. He has made sure to live the life he wants, pursuing sports, music and academics, and he has not let diabetes win.
David has been so successful because of the incredible team at the Joslin Diabetes Center. He has received world class, cutting edge care from Dr. Lori Laffel and the entire team that supports not just David but our whole family. Through the Joslin he has participated in clinical trials, attended and been a counselor at Camp Joslin, and spoken at the Joslin's High Hopes Gala. We are so fortunate to live in the Boston area and to be able to count on the greatest diabetes center in the world to keep him healthy. We are closer than ever to a cure for diabetes and the Joslin Diabetes Center is at the forefront of this research.
I have been running for the past 4 years and just finished my first half marathon. I have always dreamed of running the Boston Marathon and am absolutely thrilled to be able to support the Joslin Diabetes Center and our son, David, as a member of Team Joslin. Running a marathon, as daunting as it is, seems like nothing compared to the fight against diabetes. No matter how cold the weather, long the miles, or dark the winter, nothing about preparing for the marathon can compare to the effort to cure and treat this unrelenting disease.
Thank you for lending your support to this important cause. We all dream of a world without diabetes and with your help, the Joslin Diabetes Center will take us that much closer to a cure.
