Jessica's adventure to International Justice Mission (IJM)
Organized by: Jessica Ornat
EVENT DATE Jan 11, 2016
Anyone that knows me knows that I have a heart for social justice & human trafficking. In fact, the reason that I got my Bachelor's in Social Work & Psychology minor was to join the fight against this injustice towards innocent men, women & children.
I just finished up 15 months volunteering as an AmeriCorps VISTA providing educational services to migrant farm workers in North Carolina. I loved every minute of it.
In August, while putting together a presentation to educate staff about recognizing human trafficking in the migrant farmworker population, I came across an internship opportunity at my most favorite social justice organization: International Justice Mission (IJM - https://www.ijm.org/).
It was the day of the deadline, but I decided to go ahead & apply, realizing that it was probably a long shot. After all, I had applied for an internship once before with IJM, but was not granted the opportunity at that time (circa 2009, after just learning about IJM from a Willow Creek Leadership Summit). I felt a small nudging & knew that I should apply. I mean, why not? I had been applying for "real jobs" for several months with no, and i mean NO luck. So, apply I did. And, guess what? After 2 months of rigorous questionnaires & phone interviews, God opened the door for me to step into the world of IJM. Can you believe it? I hardly can. How did I get so "lucky"? Y'all. This is my dream job! I know. It's not a job. But, it's one of the most incredible opportunities I've ever received. And, the Lord knows what's next & where this will lead. Trust.
In January, I will be moving to D.C. for 4 months. I will be serving as an intern in the field offices for Latin America (hence the picture). Si se puede! :)
Now, I need some help to get there. I really need your prayers. I need for you to pray that God would grant me the strength & courage to move to Washington D.C., where I don't know anyone, to pursue this once in a lifetime dream. And, I need some financial help. Please pray & ask the Lord to lead you. Any amount that you sow will go towards my living expenses in D.C.
