BENEFITING: Journey Home Jamaica
She sat up in bed early that morning, “I think we are supposed to start an child care ministry in Jamaica.” Okay? I answered with confusion in my voice, still half asleep. We had traveled to Jamaica on a second honeymoon earlier that summer and saw the poverty and the desperation amidst the beautiful scenery; but was there really a need for an orphanage or children’s home on the tiny island south of Cuba? And then the first of a long list of God Connections happened with a quick Google search. That very morning, a headline in the Jamaica Observer newspaper read “We need more foster families – govt.” and stated that there were over 6000 children currently in State care and that “ the State doesn't have the space to adequately accommodate the number of children in its care.” Well, okay then, maybe there is a need. Further investigation revealed that there are tens of thousand orphans and under cared for children on this island the size of Connecticut. Unbelievable.
Since that early morning revelation, Jennifer has orchestrated many trips to Jamaica, following God’s calling on her life to provide care and assistance for those in need, especially the orphan and the widow, while sharing the gospel and providing hope to those in such desperate situations. And so was born, Journey Home Jamaica, a 501c3, non-profit ministry organization based on Psalm 82.3 “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.” And that she has done, as best that she can, for short periods of time while continuing to search for a ministry home.
So for over five years now God has shown us, over and over again, a glimpse of his vision for Journey Home Jamaica; a multi-faceted ministry that provides not only orphan care, but also education, jobs training, pregnancy care, a worship center, and gospel outreach throughout the Negril and West End area of Jamaica. We have connected with a partner church and a spirit filled pastor. We have connected with local businesses and outreach organizations. We have connected with government agencies. We have led mission teams, distributed food and clothes, and made dear friends. And, we have looked at lots (and lots!) of properties; but none have fulfilled the vision of Journey Home until now. Last year God inspired us, and showed us that an old, run down hotel had all the elements we need to propel this ministry into full time action. The property has space for the orphanage, the church, the education, and the housing of mission teams. This is not just any property, it has 28 hotel rooms, 9 buildings, parking, and 2 acres of land! It’s perfect. It needs some work; but, it’s perfect.
The Time is Now!
Having tried, unsuccessfully, to acquire the property directly from the owner last year, the property that we so confidently understood God was showing to us for this specific use, is now on the open market. The time is now if we are to fulfill this vision and begin establishing a permanent home for Journey Home. The time is now if we are to obtain this property before it is purchased by an investor or allowed to deteriorate beyond repair.
Unfortunately, property in Jamaica is very expensive. We need your help. The time is now to raise the money needed to purchase and begin renovations and begin full time ministry. Will you answer this calling to help? Our goal is to raise $250,000. It will take much more than that to finalize the purchase and renovate the property; but if we can reach this goal, we know God will direct the completion and continuation of Journey Home Jamaica.
James 1:27 says, “ Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress....” Did you know that the Bible commands us to care for orphans no less than 40 times?! And so we are being obedient in following this command; but we cannot do so without your help.
There is so much more to this story. The photographs on this site show only a small sample of the many wonderful adventures that God has led us on these five years. I hope you will explore our website at www.journeyhomejamaica.com and then read the complete story, filled with God Connections in Jennifer’s blog at www.journeyhomejamaica.blogspot.com. It’s a great story. It’s five years of God showing up and showing us that we need to keep following Him. It is a God story.
Thank you for your support and for sharing our story of how God called Jennifer to a foreign land, to be the hands and feet of Christ, and how he as honored her willingness to say YES!
