Our project will be carried out in the Mikonga suburb of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mikonga has an estimated population of 750,000. Due to the lack of industrial activity, the principal livelihood of the population remains subsistence agriculture.

Most of the population in Mikonga lives in dire poverty. Very low incomes and barely existent economic opportunity have resulted in the rapid growth in the population of street children.

The Mikonga Training Center was founded in April 2008 by Father Jean-Claude Atusameso, Founder and Executive Director of the Jatukik Providence Foundation. A team of skilled providers runs the center and they work to promote the physical, moral, and intellectual health of abandoned street children in the area. We currently serve street children from 3 to 17 years of age, whose means of survival have been through stealing and begging.

The Center itself lacks sufficient income generating activity to finance itself. Thus, we would like to develop a mechanism for self-financing the Center and provide a means of livelihood to the children. Our aim is to build a poultry operation where the children will learn how to raise hens and derive sources of income from the sale of poultry and poultry related products.

The project aims to:

Create a source of income to support the Center’s work on behalf of the local street children
Foster a healthy reintegration of the children into society
Provide the children with an intensive 12-month vocational training program that will teach them how to raise poultry, manufacture poultry related foodstuffs (e.g. mayonnaise), use poultry byproducts for farming (e.g. fertilizers), as well as manage, save, and invest money

The orphans and street children will leave the program with the knowledge and skills to earn an income and support themselves. JPF expects graduates of the program to be able to seek employment with other poultry farms and, through partnerships with other funders and financial institutions, plans to implement a system of microcredit to enable students to start their own enterprises.

To achieve this goal, the Jatukik Providence Foundation is seeking to finance the operations of the Training Center, which will require:

1 hen house
Materials and supplies (hens, chicks, plastic buckets, feedstuff, etc.
Compensation for a staff of 7 ( 1 clinical psychologist, 4 trainers, 1 veterinarian, and 1 security guard)
