Jack & Thor go to Portand Village School, a Waldorf-inspired public charter school in North Portland. Our family and many of our neighborhood friends are so lucky to have free access to the "heart, hands & head" whole-child Waldorf education that is usually offered only in an expensive private setting. PVS resists the current trends in today's schools that are pushing us towards earlier and more testing, cutting art & music education and recess to make time for high-pressure early academics that stigmatize and down-track kids who aren't ready to read at 5, 6 and 7. Our school paces academics with children's naturally developing abilities and integrates them with story, movement and art--which we know is how children learn best. This respects their innate love of learning and leaves plenty of time for music, Chinese & Spanish language, handwork, and simple play outside every day. Teachers stay with their classes for 4 years, creating a strong social fabric and caring relationships, and allowing Jack & Thor a chance to be deeply known and understood by their classmates and teachers. While we couldn't be happier with our school and teachers, we are very unhappy about our school's funding problems. Because we are a charter school, our school receives just over half of what regular public schools do--that is around 58 cents to every dollar! Our teachers work for less because they believe in these methods. As a school we have to raise money for materials, staff development, as well as field trips for our students to help make up for that difference. Please help us raise the last $10,000 that we need for this year by sponsoring our kids in this run! Thank you so much!
