Jonathan's NYC Marathon Run under the Athletes with Disabilities
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
My name is Jonathan Ledee and I am raising money for The Trevor Project/Achilles International and need your help.
In the last year you would find me pushing my limits in order to overcome a sudden, serious and unexpected nerve disability that I presently struggle with. I am battling a condition known as Hemiparesis (weakness/paralyses of one side of the body), commonly caused by a multitude of primary medical issues - in my case, nerve damage.
In search for answers over these last several months, I've come to realize my ABILITIES over my disabilities—a matter of perception. That being said, I recently accepted to participate in the 2015 NYC Marathon under the Achilles International Athletes with Disabilities Chapter. Although I may not be able to complete the course for myself, I accept the challenge to walk... or even crawl... for others!
As one can imagine, this journey has been quite a roller coaster of emotions—overwhelming to say the least. During my hospital stays, I came across adults and children who have encountered similar, if not worse, medical conditions. Knowing the emotional, physical, and financial struggle one endures, my goal is to complete this marathon for those individuals I've met along the way who struggle with this condition. Bedside neighbors, patients down the hospital halls, and those who were by my side to help me get out of bed, shower, feed me, etc. (family, friends, nurses, etc.)—their life stories/experiences are what helped me push through and get back on my feet today. So this is where Trevor Project and Achilles International come into play.
The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth ages 13-24. The need for Trevor is very real – lesbian, gay and bisexual youth are more than 4X more likely than their straight peers to attempt suicide, and youth who are questioning their sexual orientation are 3X more likely. For youth between the ages of 10 and 24, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death nationwide. Sometimes the smallest of fears and doubts are the hardest to overcome.
Achilles International is an organization with a mission to enable people with all disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self-esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life. Achilles International has given me this opportunity to join a group of individuals, just like myself, to participate in the NYC Marathon regardless of the disability. Through this organization we are reminded that we are no different and have an on-going support system throughout this lifetime.
No amount is too small, or meaningless. Every penny you contribute will help support the lives of adults and children in need. Making a donation is fast, easy, and secure. Every dollar you give goes directly to these organizations. You too can help me reach my goal by sharing this page on one of your fancy social media pages, or by e-mailing this page to other people who might want to help!
Together, we can push to bring hope, inspiration, and the joys of achievement to others who need support with questioning thoughts and disabilities. Yesterday is history, but not forgotten. While tomorrow is a chance, but shall not come unprepared.
NYC Marathon 2015. Game. On.
