The Iron Rail is a collective of volunteers who advocate and work towards a more egalitarian society. We organize horizontally, and make decisions through consensus. We oppose all forms of oppression, including white supremacy, patriarchy, heteronormativism, capitalism, and the state.
The Iron Book Collective was founded in December 2003 in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans, LA. It served as a counter-cultural hub and community organizing space, including a record shop, a bathroom, telephone, shade, and water for homeless people, a large room for free donated goods,an anarchist infoshop, and a full sized, browsable lending library.
That building was converted into high-end condos, and the Iron Rail was lucky enough to be able to sub lease a very small shop in the French Quarter. When our generous benefactor gave up their lease, we were once again priced out of our location.
The lending library, the inventory from the shop, furniture and shelves, and the famous Above Ground Zine Library are being stored. We table shows and bookfairs, and sometimes do pop-ups. One of our aspirations is to have a physical structure for the library and infoshop.
We have dibs on an abandoned, gutted house in the Upper Ninth Ward, but we owe the City of New Orleans taxes and blight liens on it, and have to rectify the blight in order to gain "legal" "possession." The fees are due the beginning of September 2015. $4,000 will cover the money owed to the city and leave some to take care of the basic blight such as sealing holes with plywood, removing trash, taming the lawn, fixing/buying doors and windows, etc.
There will be a lot of work to do to get the building up to code and more highly functioning, but "legal" "possession" of even a shell will go a long way towards restoring a resource that was loved and is missed in the New Orleans community.
This is a direct to organizer fundraiser.
