BENEFITING: Riley Children's Foundation
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: Your Journey Your Cause 2018
My name is Kelsie Gregware and I have committed to my FIRST ever full Ironman in Panama City on November 3rd, 2018. At the beginning of this journey I was doing this Ironman experience to fulfill my dream of completing one of the hardest things I will ever do in my life, swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles, equaling a total of 140.6 miles all of them completed in less than 17 hours in the same day.
However, in March 2018 a new purpose showed itself, my cousin's son, Charlie was unexpectedly diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, cancerous tumors in his brain and along his spine. With this diagnosis, what started out for me as a purely selfish reason to train to complete my FIRST Ironman, has turned into this selfless endeavor of starting a fundraising campaign to go towards the hospital that Charlie is currently receiving treatment at.
The Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis is where Charlie and his family began his chemotherapy on April 13th, 2018. Charlie and his family have a long road of inpatient care ahead, but are confident in the Neuro Oncology Team at Riley Children's Hospital. This hospital has been a true blessing to this family, from the care that they are receiving for their son, the research they are doing and the events Riley's Kids create to make families lives feel slightly normal among all of this stress. For example: my cousin and his entire family attended a dance that Riley's Foundation hosted in the hospital, where, for a moment, they all were able to dance, laugh and have fun together as a family.
Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health is one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals. Expert, family-centered pediatric care is available at Riley for every child who needs it.
Riley Hospital opened in 1924 as the state’s first hospital exclusively for children.
Now, more than 90 years later, Riley is home to the state’s largest pediatric research program, where physician-scientists move their discoveries as quickly as possible to the bedsides of children.
Children visit Riley more than 300,000 times each year.
Here are some more amazing things about Riley's Children's Hospital:
· Is the only hospital in Indiana that is nationally-ranked by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals
· Is home to Indiana’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Pediatric Burn Unit, Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation Program and Pediatric Dialysis Program
· Offers more clinical trials for children than any other hospital in the state
· Treats the vast majority of children in Indiana diagnosed with cancer
· Is Indiana’s only comprehensive children’s hospital, with experts in every pediatric specialty: urology; diabetes & endocrinology; pulmonology; nephrology; neurology & neurosurgery; orthopedics; gastroenterology & GI surgery; cardiology & heart surgery; cancer; and neonatology.
Donations to the Riley Children’s Foundation are used to support groundbreaking pediatric research, patient programs that need additional funding, Riley Maternity and Newborn Health and Family Support Programs such as Child Life and Social Work. Riley Children’s Foundation also funds Camp Riley, which provides life-changing experiences to more than 200 children with physical disabilities each summer.
Charlie and his army of angels are storming the heavens for Charlie's full recovery. We as a family are constantly praying for his recovery and the blessing of our family being cared for by this wonderful hospital.
During my upcoming race, Charlie's strength, positivity and grace that he has displayed while going through this battle with cancer will be my inspiration. I will push through what will be my hardest obstacle ever, to prove that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Just as Charlie, with the Riley's Hospitals Support, has pushed through everything that has been thrown at him like a super hero!
Thank you for supporting Charlie and the more than 300,000 kids worldwide who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. By donating to Riley's Children's Foundation, you're supporting research to give all kids with cancer a better chance for a cure. Your gifts through Riley Children’s Foundation make it possible for Riley to conduct lifesaving pediatric research and enhance treatment for patients with family-centered services.
