In the fall of 2012, my brother Nick skipped his flight home from his 2 week trip to Cape Town to stay and work at an orphanage in a local township named Khayelitsha. The orphanage is home to 30 children, age 0-18, many of whom lost their parents to HIV/AIDS.

Since then, Nick has become the Managing Director of the orphanage, and my family has traveled back to Khayelitsha multiple times to volunteer. Together, we have worked to improve the orphanage's operations from an organization level, and we have just completed the long process to start our own US based nonprofit, Intsikelelo, to help raise money for these kids and their home. Our Goal: On August 7, I will be heading back to Khayelitsha to join Nick for another 3 months. The orphanage depends on approximately $1,000 per month in donations to cover its operating costs. This includes expenses like food, electricity, transportation, school supplies, books, medical supplies, and baby supplies like formula and diapers.

Currently, the orphanage depends on a small number of periodic donors to cover these costs on a month by month basis, and the orphanage is often left scrambling to meet these basic essential needs.

Our primary focus right now is getting the orphanage the essential funds it needs to keep operating at its best without worry.

Money raised above that goal will be put toward securing the orphanage's operations even further into the future, and toward other projects that cannot currently be funded:

new beds and living room furniture (~$1,000)
kitchen supplies (~$100)

In the future, we also hope to buy a car (~$5,000) and a van (~$20,000) for the orphanage to help with transportation of the kids and volunteers. These vehicles would greatly improve our ability to bring the kids to events and to bring new volunteers, counselors, and sponsors to the orphanage to help out.
