I have a dream. El Sueño Americano.
Organized by: Paola Ferst
I had the opportunity to work with Albany and Ivania through Teach for Health, a small non-governmental organization from San Francisco, California during my Peace Corps Service in Nicaragua. These two inspiring individuals were great friends and were extremely influential during my experience. Teach for Health invited them to visit the U.S. in November, so they initiated the necessary paperwork earlier in the year. Being from very small rural communities, they were both overwhelmed and excited. Unfortunately, like many non-U.S. citizens, they were denied visas in June to visit the U.S. They were both discouraged and almost refused to go through the process of rejection once more. However, we encouraged them to try again, and I agreed to accompany them to the U.S. embassy. In August, we took a shot at round-two and they were both granted U.S. visiting visas! I cried many tears of joy on that stressful day. Albany joked that if he won the Global Dialogues competition, he would help pay my way to go to the U.S. with them. Once again proving his amazingness, he came in 2nd place in the International competition when he wrote a touching story on bullying. Of course I would never take money from him, but he made me promise that I would try to join them on their trip if they were granted visas, so this is where I can use a little help from my friends (and family). Albany and Ivania will be flying to L.A. early November where I plan to meet them. We will then travel a couple of weeks with Sarah Nunn, Co-founder of Teach for Health, and then we will fly to New Orleans to attend the American Public Health Association Annual Conference, where Albany and Ivania will present Teach for Health's work in Nicaragua. So, as I am in the re-adjustment phase and currently unemployed, I could use a little help to fund some of the travel cost and the conference fee ($300). I would also like to raise some additional money to help cover some travel expenses for Albany and Ivania since Sarah will assume most of the trip out-of-pocket. I hope to be employed soon, but until then, I could use a little cash if you want to contribute to the cause!
