The Huntington Lighthouse
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
For more than a century, the Huntington Lighthouse, has served as a trusted navigational aid to mariners, a treasured landmark for the community and an educational resource for visitors. In 1985, The U.S. Coast Guard was prepared to tear down the crumbling structure and replace it with a utilitarian steel stanchion housing the navigational aids. A local group was formed to save the structure, the first private group in the country to successfully take over and restore an offshore lighthouse. The non-profit organization, now called the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, has raised funds for much needed restoration work largely from donations and the help of volunteers.
We are so close, but there is still work to be done and time is running short.
Despite significant construction to the lighthouse, much work remains to fully repair this beloved beacon. Ongoing fund raising efforts have covered much of the restoration work, but the largest project - and least glamorous – is the foundation repair. If you’ve ever tackled a home repair project you know that unexpected issues add to the original budget. Construction crews working on the lighthouse foundation unearthed more crumbling and deterioration than anticipated, adding to the scope of the project. We are two-thirds of the way to completion, but financially can’t cross the finish line without your help. The new foundation will hold up our beloved light for another 100 years!
Help us maintain this historic beacon of pride & hope for future generations.
HLPS has raised more than $500,000, which has enabled it to secure a $250,000 State of New York matching grant. That still leaves a gap of $180,000, which needs to be raised quickly in order to continue work. Our contractor deadline of June 25 is fast approaching! Without the additional funds, work stops, setting back the significant progress we’ve made and costing more to restart.
The time to donate and help is NOW. Many hands make light work!
Thank you and check back often to see pictures of the progress!
