BENEFITING: Human Rights Campaign NYC Marathon Team
ORGANIZER: Human Rights Campaign NYC Marathon Team
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I am excited to be running in the New York City Marathon on November 6, 2016. I've decided to raise money through the Athletes for Equality Program for the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Every dollar raised will go to assist the HRC in their efforts to enhance the lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people and their families by changing hearts and minds across America and around the globe.
A year ago, the Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage was a constitutional right. Despite this monumental step forward within the United States, the fight for true equality was only beginning. Since that ruling, literally dozens of states have attempted to pass legislation ensuring that equality is not a reality for the LGBTQ community. The reasoning many insist is to protect people's "deeply held religious beliefs and moral convictions." To this day, in more than half of the states in America, a person can be fired from their job or evicted by their landlord simply because of who they love. Despite numerous efforts to pass a comprehensive non-discrimination act at both the state and national levels, most attempts continue to be met with strong opposition from social conservatives.
The fight for equality is much like a marathon... You have to take it one step at a time. As I prepare to lace up my running shoes, please consider supporting my fundraising efforts. No matter how big or small the donation, each dollar raised will improve the lives of LGBTQ people by working to increase understanding and encourage the adoption of LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices. Thank you in advance for your support!
