BENEFITING: LEON COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY
EVENT DATE: Oct 22, 2017
LCHS was introduced to the Demarco's years ago through donations that Sonya would drop off at the LCHS office. The real connection however was made through LCHS foster dog, Honey. Honey had been surrendered to a shelter by her family after having spent her whole life with them. To make matters worse, Honey had been living with untreated ear infections for so long that her ear canals had calcified causing her to lose her hearing, endure years of pain, and by the time she came to LCHS she required expensive surgery to make her comfortable. LCHS treated Honey and saw her through recovery just in time for her to meet her newest advocate in Sonya.
Sonya was moved by Honey's story and she knew Honey was the dog that her her daughter had been dreaming of adopting. Within one week, her daughter and son in law were adopting their senior puppy, Honey. Less than two years after Honey joined their family, LCHS took on another bulldog named Monty under very similar circumstances. Sonya and Michael volunteered to foster Monty who underwent surgical treatment for his ears. Following a lengthy recovery, Monty dropped the status of "foster pet" when he was permanently adopted by Michael and Sonya.
Since Honey and Monty entered their lives, the Demarco family has proceeded to open up their home to fostering. They unexpectedly adopted a dog that required heartworm treatment, getting her through every phase of the treatment themselves. Having the patience of angels, and always repeating the words "call us if you need us", Michael and Sonya have a love for the underdogs and "undercats" as well. In the last 12 months, they have added to their family by welcoming 3 behaviorally challenging adoptive kitties into their home, acclimating the rescue dogs and rescue cats as one happy family. Through their generosity, patience, advocacy, and love, Michael and Sonya Demarco encompass what it means to be Humane Heroes.
