Houston Pets Alive! (HPA!) is not your average animal rescue. HPA! acts as a safety net for animals at risk of euthanasia in Houston municipal shelters. These animals have no other options, have been passed over by adopters and other rescues, and are just hours away from death.
HPA! was born out of a need for change. In 2014, the major Houston shelters had a live release of around 30%; meaning 70% of their intake did not make it out alive. HPA! created a process for these shelters; a “euthanasia list” of animals to save, and partnered with fosters and rescues to pull as many as we could. As a result, BARC and Harris County now have live-release rates of 80-89.5%; nearing “no-kill” status (90%).
We know that saving lives is a community effort, and rely heavily on our fosters & volunteers to manage our operations. Through their support, HPA! saved 3000 animals from euthanasia in 2018 and is targeted to save 2000 in 2019.
