Campaign started and ended in 2014. See More

I am an educator transitioning into technology, and I have been living below the poverty line since 2011. Now I have a chance to pursue my dream. I have been learning about technology on my own, which has led to an opportunity to gain even more valuable experience that I can document for my job search in the technology field where women, minorities, and individuals who are not affluent are underrepresented. In addition to providing enriching learning and networking experiences, this program will give me the chance to contribute to a major open source software project. I am passionate about creating safe online learning, commerce, and entertainment experiences, so this is the best immediate opportunity I could dream of having. More information about The Ascend Project is at http://ascendproject.org/about/index.html.

You can find out more about my (mostly unpaid) work experience and contributions since 2009 on my LinkedIn page at http://linkedin.com/in/dihaynes. It will show you that I am civic-minded and have been working towards this kind of opportunity since I lost my full-time job in 2008. I hope this program (or similar ones), which provides a bridge that I have not been able to access in New York - will be duplicated across the U.S. for others to benefit. For now, I just need your help relieving some of the pressure - specifically knowing where I am going to sleep for the first two or three weeks, after which I will be able to pay for housing on my own with the program stipend.
