HART is currently helping a pair of very special cats requiring eye surgeries to preserve their sight.

Gidget was born without the outer portion of both top eyelids, a condition called eyelid agnesis. While not uncommon, especially among ferals, the condition is quite serious. The missing portion of the eyelid leaves the eyes open to constant irritation from the fur around them, corneal ulcers, and even catastrophic infection and eventual blindness. Cats with this condition can be managed temporarily with artificial tears and ointment applied every couple of hours, but this is not a long-term solution. Gidget was deemed a good candidate for a two-step surgery to reconstruct her eyelids, and we are raising funds to complete the roughly $3,000 procedures, which involve attaching a flap from her lower eyelid to create a new upper eyelid, and then separating the two in a second surgery. After a rough-and-tumble start to life, Gidget will soon be on the road to a new life with her loving foster-turned-forever family.

Midnight is a beautiful 7-year-old gal who was diagnosed with a serious eye infection, the result of ulcers on her corneas. She underwent surgery to replace her left cornea, and had the epithelial (top) layer of her right cornea removed. This operation cost approximately $4,000 and should restore the majority of her vision. Since being surrended to HART in June, Midnight has been kind, but quiet, probably owing to her eye condition. However, she really opened up during her trip to the vet for surgery and wooed all the doctors and techs at the hospital with her laid-back, sweet and winning personality. We expect this happy cat to blossom even further upon resolution of her eye troubles.
