The Federal Freedmen Bureau built schools for freed slaves including women and children to get an education. Even though every public place was segregated, white students attended for a brief time. It is the only known one left in North Carolina. They were destroyed by a white hate group. This treasure will be a museum and used for small meetings and events.

OMG! Harriet Tubman, Underground Railroad Conductor and Army Veteran supported NC Freedmen's Schools. She was a Renaissance Woman. Her second husband, Nelson Davis was twenty plus years younger. An interesting fact is that he was from North Carolina. I acknowledge Harriet for her successful "Moses trips" helping slaves to escape. Among the many wrongs, it was illegal for slaves to read.

Smithfield, NC is located in historic Johnston County. The last major battle of the Civil War was fought at Bentonville in JOCO. Partners for this project are the Johnston County Heritage Center and the North Carolina Historic Sites. Thank you to the offline donors.
