THE STORY: The face of at risk youth is forever changing. From the student in the gang impacted neighboorhood to the child who struggles socially. The Hip-Hop Chess Federation's unique fusing chess and arts to unite the minds and hearts of the youth is reaching youth from East Oakland to St. Louis. We go from the streets to the classroom to give today's youth the tools they need to bring their untapped talents to life. At HHCF we raise cognitive function, fitness levels and self esteem.
The HHCF has been featured in Forbes, Good Morning America, NBC 11, San Jose Mercury, KRON 4, BET, Chess Life Magazine and NY Times! Hip-Hop Chess Federation has proven exchanging eduation and art increases peace in the community and teaches personal responsibility. We believe the next big creator or leader is sitting in a classroom right now just looking for the guidance to help them become all they were meant to be. Since 2006 the Hip-Hop Chess Federation has helped thousands of youth from all backgrounds discover their talents and provided them resources needed to bring all their greatness to light. Our homebase is the SF Bay Area (currently serving Oakland, SF, San Jose, Alameda, Hayward and more) .
60 % of our students are age 13-18. 40% are between 3rd and 5th grade. The large majority are Latino and African American, but we pride ourselves in helping students from all backgrounds.
RZA of Wu-Tang Clan serves on our board along with HHCF founder Adisa, Kevin Hwa of Intiuit and many other esteemed community and business leaders. Our Founder has spoken at Harvard, Oberlin College, U Conn and served trained the curatorial staff at the World Chess Hall of Fame for the record breaking Living Like Kings exhibit in St. Louis Missouri.
Few know that rap music promotes chess more than any other form of music on the planet. We use that to inspire kids on a journey of self discover and self control. At the Hip-Hop Chess Federation (HHCF), we know that the face of at-risk youth is changing. Many of us think of at-risk youth as students who live in gang-impacted area's or come from economically challenged homes. The HHCF's Founder Adisa Banjoko, and staff know that at-risk includes so much more than just having a potential for gang activity or drug use. For us it is also the boy who is bullied, the kid who struggles in class, foster chidlren who often move from home to home, girl student who is socially withdrawn .
That's where the HHCF steps in!
The HHCF works to help ALL at-risk youth by providing low to no cost programs to youth in grades K-12th. These programs allow children to engage in their desires as well as open the door for students to explore new avenues they had never imagined. Our most popular and award winning programs are Chess & Life Strategies as well as the award winning Dance Fitness Programs. Other rapidly growing programs include Film/Television Production, Tumbling, Youth Enterprenuership, Martial Arts and Musical Instraments. These programs all come with life mentors, showing the kids how their passion for their hobbies can help them achieve in school and in life.
Don't forget about our Annual and Semi-Annual Commuity programs:
- Back to School Supplies Back Pack Drive
- Dressed to Impressed (HHCF supplies clothing and shoes to students in needed. To make sure they are dressed to impress at school and in job interviews)
- Free Chess & Educational Scholarship Tournments. (HHCF has given away over $10,000 in educational scholarships)
Most Programs are offered after school as well as during school across the US. In addition, we provide Safe and Engaging free school break camps to youth to youths in gang-impacted communities. These camps focus on positive community involvement while teaching educational and life skills needed for the students individual success.
Nearly all programs include Free Meals and snacks to participants. Hey Kids can't think if they are hungry. For many of our participants, the HHCF meals and snacks are the only meals they will have for the day.
Donation of any amount helps. Help us educate and inspire today's youth to become tomorrow's educators, business or community leaders.
