BENEFITING: ONE IN LONG BEACH INC
EVENT DATE: Dec 31, 2015
Mileage Tracker: 100
What Are We Doing?
In short, we are committed to hike 100 miles by the end of 2015 and are asking our friends and family to pledge their support by donating to the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach for every mile we hike.
If you can manage $1/mile (or $100), that would be phenomenal, but we appreciate ANY amount you can give. Donations are 100% tax deductible. Our goal is to raise $1,000 for the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach by 12/31/2015.
Earlier this summer I duped Manuel into completing the SoCal Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge with me. As a result, we have been doing a lot of hiking. So far, we have hiked a total of 61 miles and climbed 5 peaks (including a bonus peak). With 2 peaks to go, we are on pace to complete 100 miles by the end of 2015 and we are hoping that we can use our efforts to raise a little money for our community.
Why the Center?
Because places like the Center are a critical source of support and empowerment for our community and we want to do our small part to help it thrive.
Did you know that while only 3.4% of the U.S. adult population identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, 20-40% of the 1.7 million homeless kids in this country identifies as LGBTQ?
Did you also know that 20-30% of the LGBTQ population struggles with substance abuse and addiction, compared to about 9% of the general population?
The members of our community are at high risk for disease, violence, drug addiction, discrimination and poverty and we can only change that by sticking together.
The Center provides crucial free and low cost services to the LGBTQ population including health care, youth programs, legal services, and community and support groups. More importantly, it is a safe-haven where the marginalized feel welcomed. The Center served over 10,000 walk-in clients and 25,000 total people in 2014 alone. Thank you for reading and for considering a donation.
