Help Tessara Get To BinderCon
Organized by: Tessara Dudley
EVENT DATE Oct 10, 2014
I've got my flight covered, but I'm really struggling with finding a place to stay, and I'm worried about coving food while I'm there. I've pushed the goal out to $900, and I'm really hoping I can reach it. Thanks for supporting--this means so much to me!
Thanks to everyone who donated, I've managed to buy my ticket to New York! I'm really excited. I'm having a little trouble finding somewhere to stay while I'm there, and so any money donated beyond the cost of my plane ticket ($700) will go into making sure I have lodging (probably at a hostel), and anything more than that will go to food while I'm in the city.
Thanks again to everyone who gave, and if anyone else wants to give, I'd definitely appreciate the help. Thanks!
I am a writer and social justice educator. I am a student about one year from my bachelor's degree at Portland State University, going to school full time and working part time in the Queer Resource Centre on campus, running the "Queeries" LGBTQ Speaker's Bureau. In my spare time, I am involved with a couple of groups focused on winning justice in Ferguson, MO, a storytelling project to write and perform a show in a month, and the Vanport Multimedia Project, an effort to record the stories of survivors of the 1948 Vanport flood here in Oregon. I also write poetry and personal essays.
I've been writing for most of my life, and I've always wanted to get published. Recently, I got connected to a great network of other writers, and it inspired me to start submitting my writing to publications. I'm currently sending out writing and trying to get it published and read. I'm passionate about telling stories, and I want to share them.
About the Ask
BinderCon is a conference for women and genderqueer writers to help them make connections with other writers, and with editors and publishers. I got one of the scholarship slots, which is super amazing, because this conference could help me succeed as a freelance writer, in a big way. Unfortunately, I need help covering the cost of a flight to New York, where the conference is being held, two and a half days of food, and two nights of lodging, or I won't be able to go.
As a queer writer of colour, this is an amazing opportunity for me to pitch my writing to publishers, to make connections that might help me get my essays and poetry published in magazines, and to learn tips that will help me succeed as a freelancer. If I can't go now, I don't know when I'll get another opportunity like this.
Please support me by giving and sharing the fundraiser with your friends--I don't want to have to turn down the scholarship, and miss out on this amazing opportunity.
