#STOPTHEFIRES Co-Founder of MOC (Models of Compassion), Natascha Elisa, is visiting Indonesia and volunteering with BOSA (Borneo Orangutan Survival Australia) to help with the current crisis of fires sweeping across the region. Borneo is burning, the air is thick with dangerous atmospheric haze. The air quality index is over 1000 on most days (over 300 is considered very hazardous to health). The haze is spreading to neighboring Asian countries and over 10,000 people have reported respiratory problems due to this toxic smoke. This is not a natural disaster. These fires are intentionally set by palm oil companies which employ slash-and-burn agriculture to clear land of native trees to plant their cash crop, which is unnecessarily used as a cheap ingredient in everything from food to cosmetics. Due to global warming these fires have spread to adjacent forest land and burnt out of control. Hundreds of thousands of people across Borneo are suffering significant respiratory problems. Orangutans and other rare species are also suffering. These animals are only found in this part of the world and what is being destroyed is their only habitat. The already endangered orangutans are being burnt, poached, buried alive and beaten to death by palm oil farmers. With over 90% of their habitat destroyed in the last 20 years at this rate the orangutan may be extinct in 3-12 years from now. Currently 6 million hectares of rainforest has been destroyed from palm oil companies. BOSA has a rehabilitation facility where they rescue and rehabilitate orangutangs. BOSA also take part in putting out fires in the area. BOSA are a completely self-funded Australian non-profit organization. Natascha is planning to head to the effected region next week to gather footage from the debris, the fires, speak to locals and visit BOSA’s rehabilitation center. She will gather both photographic and video footage. MOC and its network will use this material to educate, raise awareness & to raising funds for BOSA to help repair damage has been done by these fires. Please help Natascha of Models of Compassion and the team at BOSA achieve this mission by donating to this project.
