In response to the Flint Water Crisis, the Community Service Committee of UCLA’s Black Law Student Association (BLSA) has decided to hold this fundraising campaign to raise money for the Flint Child Health & Development Fund, under the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. The Flint Child Health & Development Fund was created as a long-term solution intended to combat the negative health effects of lead exposure in children. High levels of lead exposure (lead poisoning) has been known to cause brain damage, behavioral problems, and a host of other issues in affected children. There are an estimated 9,000 Flint children that could potentially be suffering from lead poisoning. The process of recovery will be long and hard for the city of Flint, a great deal of the damage done has yet to be revealed. But we want to help, will you join us? Donate what you can and help this important and meaningful cause. Every cent that is raised (excluding the Crowdrise fees) will go directly to the Flint Child Health & Development Fund. You can also donate directly by visiting www.cfgf.org (How We're Responding).

Flint Water Crisis

In 2014 the drinking water source of Flint, Michigan was switched over from Lake Huron to the heavily contaminated Flint River in order to cut costs (estimates of $5 Million across two years ), which was approved by the Governor appointed Emergency Managers. In order to make the water potable, the water from the Flint River required a great deal of chemical purification treatment. However, anti-corrosive substances were excluded from the process. This gross oversight led to the corrosion of the city’s pipes causing both lead and iron to leak into the city’s water supply. The water change is also believed to be the cause of an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease that has killed 10 people and affected approximately another 77. We will be collecting donations until February 29th, 2016. Donate today!!!
