Help Animals Sarajevo - Drive to Stay Alive
Organized by: Scott Lang
EVENT DATE May 15, 2015
Help Animals Sarajevo is an all-volunteer NGO that has been saving Sarajevo’s dog and cat lives since 1999. The NGO was registered in 2001 and in 2002 received 4,000 m2 of land in Faletici, Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Stari Grad Sarajevo municipality for use as a temporary shelter while the fate of the land – state-owned defense property was – remained to be settled. However, even though the destiny of the land has not been decided, Help Animals learned in early 2015 – from a newspaper article – that municipal authorities were immediately seeking to relocate the shelter. Thus began the shelter’s fight for survival.
Authorities have given Help Animals until May 15 to vacate the shelter, threatening to confiscate the dogs and move them to a State shelter. The Help Animals volunteers are committed to ensuring that all of the remaining dogs at Faletici find caring accommodation, as well as to rebuilding a permanent shelter. A friend and donor of Help Animals has offered to provide a permanent gift of land where the Help Animals shelter can be relocated. However, Help Animals needs your urgent help to move all of the dogs, cats and materials from Faletici to the new location. Already, with help from German animal welfare groups 50 dogs have been rehomed abroad, but there just aren’t enough homes and transports available to rehome all of Help Animal’s dogs and cats in time.
That’s where you come in. The authors of this fundraising appeal, Scott and Dijana Lang, have already provided Help Animals with an urgent $400 cash donation and we have kick-started this on-line campaign with $400 seed funding. We met in Sarajevo in 2006 through helping stray animals and can personally attest to the love, life saving medical treatments, sterilization, socialization, vaccination, and rehoming that Help Animals has provided for more than 5,000 dogs and hundreds of cats over the years. Help Animals has also actively participated in mass sterilizations throughout Sarajevo Canton in order to humanely reduce the number of stray dogs on Sarajevo streets. This is an organization that needs to survive not just to save the dogs and cats in its care, but also to help Bosnia and Herzegovina develop a humane strategy for dealing with the root causes of strays.
6,000 euros ($6,700) is a huge amount of money to try to crowd source. So we ask all of our friends to please be generous and take five minutes to share whatever money you can spare to literally save a life. Please also spread the word of this urgent call with your friends. Help Animals needs to transport 200 dogs, 20 cats, kennels, equipment and supplies. It needs to rent bulldozers, trucks and purchase cement. All donors will be provided with a full report tracking this project, as well as photos of the new shelter – including the happily saved dogs and cats. Thanks for considering being a part of Help Animals Sarajevo’s drive to stay alive!
