Help Community in Action build a playground during the 2016 Summer Olympics in one of Rio de Janeiro's Favelas!
All children have the right to play! Some of us were lucky enough to grow up in rich natural environments full of opportunities for exploration, discovery, and free play. These experiences helped shape us as people and gave us a strong connection to the natural world around us. Today, there are thousands of youth in Rio’s favelas (shantytowns) growing up without those same opportunities to play.
In collaboration with Earthplay and Schoolworks—organizations creating Play Environments for 20+ years—Community in Action will build a playground in Pavao/Pavãozinho, one of the many favelas in Rio de Janeiro. This August, during the summer Olympics, we will be hosting 50 volunteers from around the world who will provide support. However, we need your HELP!
We are still lacking funds to buy all the materials and launch this project, which include but are not limited to:
- Wood, metal, sand, rocks, cement, hardware supplies, rope, steel columns, etc.
- Paint supplies
- Logistics support
Poverty for favela youth is not only a lack of money; it is a lack of self-respect, a sense of meaning, and opportunities for exploration. Building a playground will have diverse positive impacts on the children in this underserved region and the broader community. We plan to turn a current trash pit into a safe place to play, changing perspectives about the value of space while encouraging community members to take ownership once complete. To further support our community development goals, we will be partnering with a small grassroots NGO: Pavao Acima. This project is part of a larger initiative to revitalize this area of the favela and bring visibility to this great local start-up non-profit organization.
Many people worldwide will ignore the favelas during the Olympics. We want to continue investing in these communities and you are part of this vision, whether you donated in the past or volunteered with us in Rio.
PLEASE consider making a donation today. 100% of the funds raised through this campaign will go toward building the playground; and no donation amount is too small! Your contribution will leave a positive impact long after the 2016 Summer Olympics end.
