BENEFITING: YMCA of the Capital District
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
For the past 10 years I have been part of the YMCA movement, sharing experiences with children at camp and educating people about the outdoors. This year I have the opportunity to represent the Y by traveling with others to Brazil through an immersion program where 20 Y professionals will be learning more about the global impact of the Y.
Our mission at the Y is to bring Christian principles into practice through programs that building strong mind, body, and spirit for all. On the global view we are focusing on creating more opportunities to welcome as many people to the Y. This trip will be teaching us about cultural differences, indigenous communities, and multicultural acceptance. Brazil is a rich country with multiple populations including the Indigenous population, Afro-Brazilians, Asian immigrants, and descendants from Portugal, Italy and other European countries. We will have the opportunity to expand our awareness and enhance our understanding around global connectedness.
Part of the mission of the Capital District YMCA is to be a welcoming resource for all as there are many emerging populations in Upstate New York. My hope is to observe how the YMCA in Brazil welcomes such a diverse population and learn new approaches to reaching out to communities that not part of the Y. I also hope this experience will inspire new ideas of how to make camp a welcoming environment for more people who would normally not consider visiting camp, such as refugee populations.
I hope you can see how this training program will be beneficial in spreading more awareness about the diverse populations we wish to serve at the Capital District YMCA. I hope you will support me as I take more steps in developing myself as a Y Leader.
