Creating a Better Future for our Disabled, One Step at a Time
On Sunday, October 8, 2017, I will dedicate each step of the 26.2 miles that comprise Peoria's Whiskeydaddle Marathon to the Heart of Illinois Special Recreation Association!
HISRA helps persons with disabilities and special needs reach their highest potential through programs designed to integrate healthy relationships, life skills, and adaptive recreation. Engaging day camps such as Camp Free to Be, and FOCUS help children and young adults form friendships and have fun in a safe, supportive environment. Enjoyable events are an important part of the curriculum. Participants join with staff in grocery shopping, cooking, fun exercise, learning about nutrition, exploring the community, socializing with friends, and playing games. Focused interests are encouraged through key activity such as dances, fishing, pottery, ice cream socials, theatre, and swimming.
A proud sponsor of Special Olympics, HISRA offers training in a wide variety of sports, for persons with any disability. Additionally, this organization is home to the Peoria Wildcats Wheelchair basketball team!
Most importantly, ALL of these enriching experiences mean that challenges of education and work are met with improved confidence and skill.
Shane and I have a fantastic daughter, Katie, who was born with cerebral palsy, a disorder of motor control, balance and tone which creates difficulty for her in overall movement. She has a zest for life, and is very bright. She loves horseback riding, her racing wheelchair, cooking, and anything that involves socializing with other people.
Running has led me to a group of friends who are inspired to improve the lives of their communities. We offer up our time, love, and even our struggle for others to whom these programs would not otherwise become available. I am proud to support HISRA as they transform lives with hope, kindness, and tangible life strategies for persons with disabilities. It takes individual donations from people like you and me for Heart of Illinois Special Recreation Association to continue its mission.
Gifts of any size make a difference!
