Why is younger better?

By five years old, our food and fitness preferences are often set. Which makes the link between our childhood and adult health strong. It’s also easier to learn a good habit than break a bad one!

Roughly one-third of Texas children are overweight or obese, and one in five children nationwise. HealthStart fills the urgent need for early health education today so our children and communities can thrive tomorrow.

How do we do it?

We design fun, science-based programs to help children adopt healthy habits younger. HealthStart delivers on its mission with key programs like

Our curriculum, Health Education for Youngsters (HEY!), which uses a whole-child approach to build on the natural curiosity of our oungest about how their bodies work with ways to be healthier.
Our cafeteria nutrition education pilot, What are YOU Feeding? uses colorful graphics and food categorization to help kids make a direct connection between what they eat and their health.
Our mobile app Monstralia, which is currently in development, takes concepts from HEY! and brings them into the home in a fun interactive game.

As a result, our students become health “change agents,” sharing what they learn with their families and influencing the community at large by changing how we eat, move and live together.

What’s our story?

In 2010, Robin Herskowitz founded HealthStart following a long career and interest in community health that began with her upbringing. The greatest influence on her health conscious family was her grandmother, Ida F. Levinson, a passionate public health advocate and pioneering woman who directed the Harris County Public Health Department in the 1930s. Her grandmother’s beliefs in public service and early health prevention inspired Robin. HealthStart reflects those beliefs. Today, we have an amazing team that supports an army of teachers to serve more than 2,000 kids.

Where are we going?

Since our first year, HealthStart has grown the number of schools it reaches by 566%. We plan to keep expanding our educational outreach regionally to eventually help children across America live healthier lives.
