Domestic violence has long-term physical, emotional, and financial implications for survivors and their families, and it is a crime that knows no boundaries. It crosses all racial, social, and economic lines, affecting women, men, and children from all communities. It affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men. And the number one reason that survivors stay or return to an abusive relationship is that they do not have the financial means to leave their partner.
In response, Health Imperatives provides survivors of violence with comprehensive supports. This includes emergency shelter, crisis counseling, assistance in procuring restraining orders, and financial empowerment services. Through all of these efforts, we serve nearly 2,000 survivors of violence a year.
This year, through the Purple Purse Campaign, we are raising vital funds for our domestic violence shelter, Penelope's Place. Specifically, donations will support four main initiatives. They are:
FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT: These donations will support the long-term financial independence and economic security of survivors and children. We will assist survivors in opening bank accounts, paying for educational courses or job training, budgeting classes, and more!
SOPHIE'S FUND: Established in December 2016, this fund supports children's programming at our shelter. This includes summer outings, birthday and holiday parties, funds for children to attend camp and/or after-school programs, arts & crafts, writing workshops, and more.
WELLNESS SERVICES: Donations to this fund will support our efforts to improve the physical and mental well-being of shelter residents. We offer trauma-informed yoga, knitting, community walks, gardening, group support sessions, and more.
GOING HOME FUND: These donations will support survivors' transitions out of a shelter environment and into their new homes. We will provide families with furniture and furnishings, including bedding, pots and pans and other kitchen wares, towels, and more. These items are essential in helping families turn their first houses into warm and welcoming homes.
Together we can provide help, hope, and opportunity to children and families who are struggling with the devastating effects of domestic violence. Thank you for your support!
