HB Studio is a space created by theater artists, for theater artists.
HB Studio was founded in 1945 by the Broadway actor and director Herbert Berghof. Legendary actress Uta Hagen joined Berghof as his partner, in life and at the Studio, soon after it began and lead the Studio as a master teacher until her death in 2004. Based on her teaching at HB, Hagen authored her seminal texts Respect for Acting and A Challenge for the Actor, cementing her legacy as one of the greatest American master-teachers of acting in the 20th century.
We offer a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum for artists at every stage of their careers. We provide a haven free from commercial pressures, allowing artists to develop and hone the skills they need to succeed in a competitive field. Our hallmark is, and always will be, creative freedom.
