BENEFITING: Harris County Hospital District Foundation
Dawn Foster was in her early 40's when, in 2013, she felt a sharp pain and noticed a lump in her right breast. Cancer crossed her mind, but everyone told her "cancer doesn't hurt".
Her primary care physician at Harris Health System's Casa de Amigas Health Center ordered a mammogram. The pain had been tolerable but one day, before the mammogram was scheduled, it became excruciating. She went to the Emergency Center at Harris Health System's LBJ Hospital where she had an ultrasound.
Dawn was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. This was a full year after her first pain. She started six months chemotherapy and had a mastectomy of her right breast, followed by 7 weeks of irradiation. Because of a positive genetic test, her ovaries were removed as a precautionary measure.
The cancer journey has left Dawn homeless. Previously a home health aid, she can no longer work because of neuropathy, back issues and depression.
Education, easier access to screening, and early diagnosis mean better survival rates. We invite you to join us to eliminate disparities and continue advancing women's health by providing mammography screenings and services to those who have limited or no access.
