Substance abuse is a serious issue throughout the country but especially here in Maryland. According to the Maryland Department of Health in 2018 there were 2,406 alcohol and drug related deaths in the state (an all-time high). Already in Anne Arundel County this year deaths linked to opioid abuse has reached 117. This number does not include deaths from alcohol or other substances.
Harbour House, a non-profit organization has been known throughout the county for our work with individuals with mental health. This year we opened our first substance abuse treatment facility. Our program helps individuals suffering from addiction issues to re-engage in the community while still receiving residential treatment.
Many of the clients we serve are homeless, have limited support from family/ friends and are trying to starting over with little to nothing.
As part of the program we would like to introduce our residents into ways to have fun without the use of substances. This is where we need your support. Introducing our clients to healthy and positive recreational activities now will not only give them something to look forward to in the program but it will introduce them to a new activity that they can do long after they leave us.
