The Story

EVENT DATE: Oct 22, 2016

Come out and join us for Run the Rock! A fun 5K race/walk to benefit Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County held at Rock Manor Golf Course. Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County’s signature community, family fun fundraiser event is sure to get your blood pumping! We do this event to raise funding and awareness to help people such as Darresha Scott. Let me tell you about her story: Can you imagine your family living in conditions with mice, mold, and insects infecting your home? Darresha Scott, one of our current homeowners, lived in this type of environment in an apartment with her two sons, Jayden, ten years old and Jah’mir, three. To make matters worse, her son Jah’mir received lead poisoning while living in their apartment, and according to James Krieger, MD, MPH and Donna L. Higgins, PhD, “One million young children in the United States have blood lead levels high enough to adversely affect their intelligence, behavior, and development.” Hospitalization for children is sometimes required if the case is severe enough where they are treated with a chelating medication to help the child pass the lead naturally. This is only one of the 230 families’ stories since we began our mission on June 6, 1986, 30 years ago, to create real change in the lives of homeowners and our community. This is why our mission of putting God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope can change lives. Also, this event promotes a healthy lifestyle, as well as HFHNCC’s efforts to revitalize neighborhoods and personally transform lives through creating the opportunity to become a homeowner. Following the run/walk there will be food and refreshments available for participants as everyone mixes and mingles until awards are announced.
