“Have you ever seen a real star?”
“No,” says the child.
“What about blue sky?”
“I’ve seen one that’s a little blue,” the child replies.
“What about white clouds?”
“No, I haven’t,” the child replies.
This dialogue happens in real life in China and was drawn from one of China’s most famous documentary film last year named Under the Dome. This film is made by a well-known Chinese journalist Chai Jing and it has drawn more than 150 million viewers in the first days after Chai posted it online. China was again in the media’s spotlight, while this time not for its rapid economic growth, but for its notorious air condition.
This film is the stimuli and start of our investigation of China’s air condition. As we continued our inquiry, we found out that the current urban transportation system, Beijing for example, contributes 31% to the PM2.5, a notorious air pollution indicator. Besides, the idling diesel engine, which always happen at bus stops, will emit more pollutant than ordinary status and there is little related regulation in China. That’s where the initial mission with our Green Bus Stop comes from: help improve air condition and raise public awareness for further regulation.
The current green bus stops either plant a green wall or equipped with green roofs which need extra soil or nutrient-rich water which is expensive while moss and lichen need much less and easier to maintain. Since the lichen and moss are sensitive to the air pollutants, they can not only absorb the air pollutant and CO2 but also monitor the air quality. We can paint the moss on the wall as what we like making it a new platform for noncommercial advertisements to promote environment awareness.
The initial goal of this fundraiser is to raise $20,000.00 to retrofit 100 bus stops in 2 years in Wuhan, China, the hometown of our teammber and then to other cities if possible. We not only hit our initial goal by applying moss and lichen as air pollution monitor, using green wall to absorb pollutants and performing green art, but exceed it in the long run. We believe that this project will improve urban landscape, improve citizen well-being and generate radiation effect to the whole nation. Thus, it is the donation from every one of you that enables our dream to come into reality and it is your attention that will help us go further with our Green Bus Stop!
