Your Greenbelt Lions Club Needs Your Help

By Harvey Hauptman and Konrad Herling

For many decades, many folks shopping at the Greenbelt Co-Op have chatted with volunteers with the Greenbelt Lions Club who expressed their purpose, “Help the Lions Help the Blind”.  Folks who made contributions would have received a white cane to express the Club’s appreciation.  For more than 70 years, the Greenbelt Lions have embraced their mission to help the vision and hearing impaired in our community and around the world.

These contributions have helped in so many ways ranging from providing for free eye exams and glasses, distributing coats and toys to Greenbelt students in need, to supporting the Lions Leader Dog Training Facility which provides free aid dogs nationwide.

There are numerous other benefits derived from supporting the Greenbelt Lions, which is part of a larger organization, (the Lions Club International), spanning across our Washington area, nationally, and internationally.  Lions also help provide support for those whose lives have been severely challenged due to hurricanes, fires, and the pandemic which has exacerbated homelessness and hunger.

Support from local businesses and organizations such as The Greenbelt American Legion,  Beltway Plaza Mall, Mission Barbeque, Hook & Reel Cajun Seafood & Bar, The Rotary Club of Greenbelt and the Free Art for All has been invaluable to the Greenbelt Lions Club. (All of these groups have contributed to the Club’s Annual Pancake Breakfast with Santa.  Unfortunately, the Breakfast had to be cancelled this year due to the pandemic.) However, The Greenbelt Lions Club’s main source of funding comes from individual contributions.   It’s clear the pandemic has made fundraising efforts more challenging.

So, what do we do to keep hope alive and provide service for those in need?  One can see a lot is at stake! Can we raise funds to keep these programs going for our community?  Yes, we can.

To help the Lions continue to offer these services and programs for Greenbelt, they are asking for you to contribute via their “GoFundMe” campaign.   The goal for their campaign is to raise $7,000.  One hundred percent of the monies the Greenbelt Lions raise go directly to efforts they support.  As they are now in their 70th year of providing these services to the Greenbelt area, they are tagging their effort as 7K for 70 years.  Whatever your contribution is, it’s a priceless gift to Greenbelt.
