We are GlobalGirl Media-Chicago. A direct educational media program that trains adolescent girls from diverse underserved backgrounds in Chicago ages 14-19.
The program consists of intensive journalism and media training focusing on issues that matter to the girls: immigration, education, environment, health and LGBTQ rights to name a few. Through workshops, mentoring, on-site project-based learning, and access to a worldwide network of media partners, we use media training to build confidence and capacity among marginalized young women, preparing them to become the next generation of change leaders.
As female media-makers, we are at a critical crossroads as we step into positions of leadership. Yet the fact is, the models we are working with remain broken. Female voices are still under-represented in all media - from newspapers to radio to movies. When half the population is behind less than a third of news stories, all of society suffers.
Our training is holistic and comprehensive. We not only cover traditional film and video skills, we also work to create a safe space for girls of color. When so often in classrooms or professional settings, they feel an acute "imposter syndrome," unheard, misrepresented or tokenized, through GGM they can learn why their voice matters and how to access it. We have seen 75% of our graduates go on to higher education in media and/or placement in internships and jobs in film and journalism.
