BENEFITING: Save the Children

Beth Raley

It’s really quite simple. I’m searching the internet, and I see a news article about an individual who had so much money she decided to buy a $12 Million home. Okay, to each his own. But, there’s more- She decided she didn’t like the house, so what did she do? She bulldozed it. I couldn’t believe it. $12 million dollars gone- just like that- because, to her, $12 million dollars was nothing. I thought about how many lives could have been drastically improved with that $12 million. Then, my mind went off spiraling into thoughts of how lucky I am that in my 23 years of life, I have never had to worry about having a roof over my head or food on my table. It was exhausting to think of all the people in the world who were not as fortunate as me. I took a break from my thoughts to do what many in today’s society do: Facebook. Then, as I signed on, I saw something. 889. 889 Friends. Sure, many of them I had only had brief encounters with in the past, but we all had something in common, having grown up in a much better environment than the majority of children in the world. So I got to thinking, 889 friends, that’s 889 people that I have the opportunity to inspire to make this world just a little bit better for others. Being a “number person”, I immediately began crunching numbers in my head.

889 friends.

25 cents a day for one year.

Seems simple enough, doesn’t it? …. IT IS! 25 cents a day for one year. That’s not asking much and guess what…. IT ADDS UP!

If each friend were to take on my challenge of donating the equivalent of 25 cents a day for one year, we could collectively raise $81,121.25. It’s hard to imagine raising so much money, butif we all work together, we really can make a significant difference.

Sometimes it’s hard for us to donate with a lump sum in mind. But don’t think that way. It’s so easy-- for 25 cents a day, the price of a piece of bubblegum from a candy dispenser, we can each accumulate $91.25 per person.

Here is my proposal:

Get a jar, a cup, a bowl, a piggy bank, or anything to contain your 365 days of giving. Every day, drop in a quarter, maybe even do this as you say a little prayer or make a wish. Pledge to yourself that you will do this for one year, 365 days. Make it a project. Decorate the jar. Have fun with it! Tell your children and let it be part of their bedtime wish/prayer ritual. Each time you hear the coin hit the others, the sound will represent the impact you will make on someone else’s life.

By no means does your donation need to be equivalent to 25 cents for 365 days. Donations of any amount are extremely helpful and greatly appreciated. But I wanted to emphasize the tremendous outcome that could come from all of us working towards a common goal.

Did You Know…

  • 25% of the world lives without electricity
  • 21% of the world lives on less than 1.25 a day- that’s about 1/3rd the price of your daily Starbucks drink
  • 17% of the world lives without ever having enough to eat- that’s more than the population of the US, Canada and the EU combined
  • The total of everyone’s income in the poorest 48 nations is LESS than the combined wealth of the world’s THREE richest people
  • Each year, over 10 MILLION children in developing countries die before the age of 5 (50% of the deaths are attributed to malnutrition)
  • Around 17% of people don’t have safe water, and 40% lack basic sanitation. – Dirty water and poor sanitation account for the vast majority of child deaths (almost 5,000 every day)
  • It is estimated that 684,000 child deaths worldwide could be prevented by increasing access to Vitamin A and Zinc
  • LESS than 1% of what the world spends each year on weapons could put EVERY child in school.

Imagine living your life never knowing what it feels like to fully satisfy your hunger, your child’s hunger. Think how terrible it would feel for your child to constantly be on the verge of starvation and there is nothing you can do to help him. Imagine going to bed every night knowing it could be your child’s last night simply because you don’t have access to clean water and nutritious food.

It’s hard isn’t it, to think of yourself or your child going through such an experience. The world is a scary place, but this is something we can do to make it a little less scary for all of those innocent young children just beginning what could be a long beautiful life, if only they had a little help.

Please consider taking on this challenge with me. I know it’s difficult times and things life might seem harder than usual, but compared to the statistics above, I think we can all agree we are blessed. So, let’s pass on the blessings. -Beth
