In June 2018,  I had the chance and opportunity to step out of my confort zone and join a small group of volunteers in Kibera, Kenya. There, in the largest urban slum in Kibera, I joined Project Kenya in their effort with the Red Rose Primary School and the Community Center for adolescents Uweza Foundation to give the children of the slum a "Chance to Shine" through education and a path to find their talent as a way out of poverty. The prior year I had the chance to volunteer at a school in Haiti, and the eye-opening process had started ! I arrived in Kibera thinking I would see extreme poverty and misery, and yes, did I see it, just like in the documentaries I had watched.  Yes I did see poverty, but not once throughout the whole trip did I ever see misery. Beyond the first impression, you realize that "Life" takes its place and that hapiness and "joie de vivre" come out of the harsh daily life. This year, after seeing what these kids and teenagers brought to me, so much more than what I had given them, I wanted to do more: This Fundraiser is my way of opening a discussion and raise awareness to this special place and its people I came to love so much. Throughout the trip I met a lot of people that made a mark on me, but one kid in particular touched deep into my heart ; Eddie, a 4th grader who had the most vibrant smile I had ever seen. He was an outgoing and funny kid, a little shy at the same time, just like me, and from nowhere we connected, and his smile was contagious. I will always remember the last moment before leaving Red Rose Primary school, everyone was crying and saying goodbye, and right before I left, Eddie grabbed my hand and gave me one of his toy cars. Little did I know, he had only two... One for me, one for him. This was by far the best gift I was even given! This is what made me choose to sponsor Eddie. Sponsoring a child is about more than money, as cliché as this sounds, it is about giving someone through education the opportunity that they would have never had, but most importantly it is about creating a relationship that lasts through time, and knowing that you give this kid a chance to have a better future.

In sponsoring a child you will help me give the Kibera kids a "chance to shine"!

Merci!
