THE STORY:

The Kids Club is a group of devoted Lycee Francais de Los Angeles students whose goal is to raise money to help the children in one of the largest slums of Kenya (Kibera) through different fundraising events.

Why Kibera? One of the founders of the Kids Club (Pierrick Gould) volunteered last summer at Uweza Foundation and the Red Rose School located in the heart of the slum and decided to keep going his actions with the help of his friends. Basic life necessities do not exist over there: scarce meals, no clean water, no plumbing and no electricity. Sickness and disease are a constant worry for the families and life expectancy for people living in the slum is under 30 years old. As a result, most kids have either one or no parents.

As you can imagine, for most of those families living with under $1 a day, paying any amount for adequate schooling is very difficult. Majority of kids finish school at 8th grade (or before) because fees double for high school. Uweza Foundation and the Red Rose School, thanks to their programs, are trying to break this cycle of poverty. First by finding sponsors who can finance the education of the children but also by helping the kids to develop talents in different fields (soccer, art, business, dance, …). Eventually, the children find their own path and is able to get out of the slum.
