Thanks for visiting my page!
As some of you know, I've dreamed about running the NYC marathon ever since I first watched the race. I have entered the lottery in the past, but this year a number of things have made that dream feel much more urgent.
There were hundreds of charity partners to choose from to get entry, but Girls on the Run stuck out from the start. Their mission - "to give young women confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness" spoke to me on two levels.
1) As a father of 7 and 9 year girls, I see two smart, funny, curious and clever ladies who, statistically speaking, will find it harder and harder to maintain those virtues in the face of middle school, high school and beyond. Any way I can give them confidence and help them understand they can do what they set their mind to is really important to me. Girls on the Run has the same goals in mind.
2) Additionally, as many of you know, my brother started a children's running program at the Boys and Girls Club in Milford a couple of years ago with the same intention - building confidence and character through running, with a 5K goal. Hearing Michael talk about these kids, who had no experience, cross the finish line at the end of the program was incredibly moving. Thinking about his service, it is humbling to think about continuing on a path he started. Running is one of the places I find where I am connected to him.
So, this felt right. If you are interested, I invite you to donate to this organization.
Thanks for stopping by and reading.
About GIRLS ON THE RUN:
Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, we teach life skills through fun, engaging lessons and conversation-based running games. The 24-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful a contribution to community and society.
