Girls on the Run - Chicago (GOTRC) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that uses the power of running to inspire a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among 8-14 year-old participants. GOTRC utilizes an innovative lesson plan that aims to instill in each girl the attitudes and behaviors that will foster emotional and physical health throughout her lifetime. The curricula seeks to reduce the potential display of at-risk activities among its participants, including unhealthy eating and sedentary lifestyles, adolescent pregnancies, depression and suicide attempts, and substance abuse problems.
At the end of each season, the girls, along with coaches, family members, friends, and community runners, participate in the "Girls on the Run 5K" as their capstone achievement. The 5K offers the girls a tangible experience of healthy goal-setting and success, and lays the foundation for future achievement in athletics and beyond. Girls on the Run focuses not just on physical health, but emotional, mental, and social health as well. We truly strive to shape the "whole girl" so that she can grow up to be a strong, successful, and productive member of her community.
