Gestur & Moni Recovery Funds
Organized by: Kate Kuss
Thanks to everyone who has been reaching out and asking how to help. Unfortunately, Gestur and Moni’s home for the last 13 years in St. Gabriel, Louisiana has been severely damaged by the flood. While Louisiana is known for high water levels, they do not live in a flood zone and they never expected their property or home to get flooded.
The water started creeping into the house on Tuesday, 8/16. On Sunday, 8/21, when we stepped onto their driveway, the water came up to my knees and their entire 3.25 acres of land looks like a lake. You cannot see the ground. You cannot see your feet when you are walking through the water. My heart sank when we walked into their house. There is 10 inches of standing water inside their home. The water is dark brown and has destroyed the furniture and it is slowly seeping up the walls. The floor boards are coming up so with every step, you have to be careful. There is floating wood and debris everywhere. The smell is so strong and foul that it makes breathing in the house difficult. All of the emotions of what a home gives such as security, love, comfort and happiness came into my mind. Now each room looks so different. Their backyard which holds so many fun memories such as playing ball with the dogs, hanging out by the pool, BBQ’ing and enjoying the Louisiana sunsets is totally under water. I know they will rebuild but to see their beautiful home completely destroyed by this flood is absolutely heart breaking.
Gestur and Moni along with their dogs, Pinot Noir and Katla, are staying at their very good friends' home in Baton Rouge. The dogs are confused and you can tell they have no idea what’s going on. Moni and Gestur are still smiling, laughing and trying to keep positive attitudes even though they know how much work is ahead of them. With the help of their friends and community, they were able to get their personal belongings such as pictures, clothes, art work and books out of their home before it was too late. They used a boat to carry boxes to dry land. All appliances, furniture and tools were left behind and are pretty much ruined. We are waiting for the water to go down so we can start ripping out the floor and walls. The longer the water sits in their home, the more damage the water will create. Officials are estimating it will take another few days before we see any changes in the water levels and even then, it will take a while for the water to go down.
Family and friends, we are setting up this fundraising page to help Gestur and Moni rebuild their home. Please share with your family and friends. Please share with everyone you know. Every little bit will help.
