“The two most important days of your life are the day you were born…and the day you find out why.” -Twain
My name is Erin Dreis and I am a military veteran on a mission to save the lives of other South Dakota Veterans through North Carolina Outward Bound. This is my story: in February of 2010, I joined the SD Army National Guard’s 200th Engineer Company and later deployed with them in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Afghanistan. Since returning home in 2012, I have grieved alongside of fellow soldiers, families and friends at the passing of three SD veterans through suicide; three heroes gone far too soon. In an effort to find healing and hope in my life following the passing of my friends, I searched out alternative outlets for healing for veterans and the Outward Bound Veterans program at the North Carolina Outward Bound School.
My life was forever changed on May 26, 2015 when I embarked on my North Carolina Outward Bound course. The course became the single greatest healing event of my life. Upon returning from my course, my spirit was ignited with a fire to spread the hope that Outward Bound offers to all of my fellow veterans and to give them the opportunity to experience healing in their life. There is a quote by Mark Twain that says “The two most important days of your life are the day you were born…and the day you find out why.” I truly believe that I have found the answer to the second part of Twain’s quote and that answer is the same as my mission in creating Geocache for Soldiers 2016; to bring hope of healing to my fellow military Veterans, and in doing so, possibly saving a life.
