GMF’s mission is to entertain, inspire, and create appreciation for musical experiences throughout the Finger Lakes region by presenting concerts of the highest caliber to diverse audiences of all ages in areas with little access or exposure to live performances of world-class musicians. It began as a weekend of chamber music in 2011 and has expanded to a three week season with 14 concerts, dozens of professional artists performing chamber music, jazz, and bluegrass plus a week of free educational outreach to the schools and community. In 2018, GMF celebrated African-American music, poetry, and perspectives with performances by renowned jazz artist T.S. Monk, Broadway star Syndee Winters, pianist Michelle Cann, and the world premier of a chamber arrangement of Florence Price’s Concerto in One Movement. The 2019 season runs May 20-June 16, including 5/20-23 for educational outreach. Performances will highlight women composers and musicians, a focus that complements the extensive history of women’s rights advocacy in the Finger Lakes region. Music by composers of the past, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach and Florence Price along with contemporary composers Jennifer Higdon and Caroline Shaw will be performed.
