The Genesis House mission is to promote the general welfare of victims of domestic and sexual violence by providing shelter, goods, and services while helping them find safety in their lives and the self-sufficiency and healing needed to become independent.

Genesis House supports victims of domestic and sexual violence through a number of programs and services. Genesis House serves a large area with less than ten full-time employees. Although Genesis House's impact is impressive, the truly moving narratives come from the survivors.

A former client of Genesis House, who is a survivor of domestic abuse, has decribed some of the ways in which fiancial abuse affected her life and family. Through this client's own account, we are given a glimpse into some specific ways that financial abuse is used to control victims:

"Financial control is found in most domestic abuse/domestic violence cases. I am a survivor of domestic abuse. My abuse came about very slowly in my marriage. You know, the subtle things, like asking why you purchased an item? Doesn’t seem like a big deal in a world that is consumed with budgets, does it? Then, as his need to control became stronger, he began talking down to me. The conversations about spending no longer existed, except for the screaming and yelling that came about after receipts with items circled for explanation, were left for me to address. I was expected to write my responses for the items in question on the receipts and leave them for his review. We were a dual income household and I brought home more money than he did. Why did I endure this, you might ask? As most will tell you, this was only part of my abuse. And, as I was the one receiving the bad treatment, I was sparing others, our children, from the wrath of the evil person I called my husband. Control was what he lived for. He had a good job at one time. His desire for control grew, so did his desire for alcohol. His behavior ultimately led to his dismissal from his employment. He was unemployed for almost a year. But, still monitoring the expenses and questioning more than ever, my expenses. At the end of my marriage, when I could not withstand the verbal and emotional abuse any longer, I asked him to leave. The controlling man I had lived with for many years, became violent. My children and I were removed from a life-threatening encounter by local authorities. No one knew what I lived daily. I learned to hide things well. I learned to alienate those that tried to help me, the ones that came to me inquiring about my well-being. People see, people notice. Staying in or going back to an abusive relationship is driven many times by financial situations. Sometimes it is financial stability, others it is financial control by an aggressive spouse or partner. The anger that is displayed in these financial confrontations, often signals what can and sometimes does happen as a violent end to the relationship. Financial assistance helps victims become survivors. It can come in the form of monetary donations, or the giving of time and teaching of skills to help survivors become financially independent. Please help someone, someone you might know, break their ties in a toxic relationship. It is not always easy to just walk away. Most of the time, you need help. "

Genesis House employees, board members, and volunteers dedicate significant time and energy to make the most of the resources we have, but we are always in need of donations and volunteers. With only seven full-time employees serving nine counties, Genesis House staff has become expert at serving a large number of survivors with limited resources. Every donation helps us provide support and services needed to survivors of sexual and domestic violence throughout the region. Some examples of the services offered by Genesis are: the Supportive Housing Program, emergency shelter services, weekly support groups, children's support groups and advocacy.

The Genesis House philosophy is that victims should have access to immediate crisis intervention during emergency situations as well as continued support, advocacy, and educational opportunities. For this reason, Genesis House offers this variety of services, and provides support to survivors using a multi-faceted approach.
