About Weston Popichak
Weston Popichak is a zoo keeper who has worked with elephants and currently cares for rhinos. He is looking to spread awareness about the current and ongoing rhino and elephant poaching crisis. He has competed in trail ultra marathons ranging from 50 kilometers to 100 miles, having previously ran half and full road marathons, and is now gravitating towards triathlons. Through working with Global Conservation Force, he hopes to bring awareness of the needless poaching of rhinos for their horns and elephants for their tusks to the endurance athletics community. Rhinos are currently being poached at a rate higher than is sustainable for the species to survive. This is for two main reasons: the horn’s falsely advertised medicinal benefits, and the horn being viewed as a luxury item for increased social status. Elephant ivory has long been used for carving material and traditional art and at current rates an elephant is lost to poaching every 8 hours. At work, Weston is currently working to bring up Northern and Southern White rhino numbers, but he hopes to further educate people on the poaching crisis in a far spreading community of far traveling athletes. Weston is still in need of a good racing bike, cycling shoes, and tri suits.
